What is the Cultivating Our Community Project?

The “Cultivating Our Community” project is a collaborative effort to develop a planned and coordinated approach to beautify Genesee County and set higher standards for the visual landscape of our community. A clean and attractive community encourages economic development, improves the community’s image and is a vibrant place to live, work, and play. The project is funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation in partnership with Keep Genesee County Beautiful, Ruth Mott Foundation-Applewood, and the Genesee Regional Chamber of Commerce.

The goal of the project is to:

Encourage the use of a core “Cultivating Our Community” plant palette which will provide uniformity and year round color throughout Genesee County.

Educate the community on the importance of beautification as a means to develop community pride, enhance the community’s image, and encourage economic development.

Engage in community-wide beautification efforts by providing how-to manuals, demonstration gardens, and sample landscape site plans for businesses and homeowners.

Specific project outcomes are to:

Beautify gateway traffic triangles and park entrances in the City of Flint.

Beautify elementary school entrances in the City of Flint.

Beautify out-county city or township gateways.

Identify multiple sponsors and partners for each site including businesses, schools, organizations, and neighborhood groups to adopt and plant each site.

Require all sponsors and partners to sign a 5-year maintenance agreement for each “Cultivating Our Community” gateway site.

Develop a “How-To” Guide to educate sponsors, businesses, homeowners, community groups and individuals about the new approach to beautification in Genesee County.
