Annual Litter Index

What is the Litter Index?
It is an information gathering process that will help assess our community’s current litter situation and will provide a guide for focusing on future improvement activities.

Who does the index?
Trained volunteers from our Board of Directors, community volunteers and staff complete the index.

When is it completed?
It is completed every year in June/July.

Where is it done?
We used the nine county commissioner districts as starting points and then sub-divided each district into 15 smaller areas. We do not cover every street, but plot a route that covers residential, business, schools, parks, highways and expressways.

How is it done?
It is a visual “windshield “survey completed by trained volunteers and staff. Volunteers receive training on how to score an area for litter. This is a subjective snapshot of the area on the day the index is completed. Scores are greatly influenced by weather conditions, the persons completing the survey, previous clean-up efforts, trash days and/or local special events.

How is it scored?

It is scored on a four point scale.

= little or no litter
(litter could be picked up by one person in a very short time)

= slightly littered
(litter could be picked up by one or two people in a short time)

= littered
(litter pick up would require an organized group effort over multiple hours)

= extremely littered
(litter pick up would require an organized group effort over multiple hours and/or heavy clean up equipment)

What were the results?
The impression by almost everybody was that, taken as a whole, Genesee County is cleaner than is commonly believed. Generally speaking, public areas are the most littered and private areas are better. Maps are available for specific analysis of annual index results. (Link for Maps)

How are the results used?
Keep Genesee County Beautiful uses the results to:
Target efforts for litter and clean up for the next year.
Provide the information to local elected officials as they plan cleanup efforts.
Provide information to neighborhood groups, schools and service organizations that are looking for community service projects.

What is our ultimate goal?
Our goal at Keep Genesee County Beautiful is to have a map that is all green. That means that we have engaged individuals to take greater personal responsibility for improving our community environment.
